This is the controller only. If you need valves and a pump see Smart Thermostatic Control 32 complete Maxx-Flow system. If you have your own pump but need valves see Smart Thermostatic Control 32 and Maxx-Flow valve(s).
The Smart Thermostatic Control 32 is a demand-sensing hot water recirculation control system designed for homes without a dedicated hot water recirculation loop. Designed for use with our Maxx-Flow thermostatic crossover valve, the highest flow crossover valve available. The plastic crossover valves from Grundfos, Watts, and Taco just don’t have the water flow necessary to quickly heat up the water on demand. If you have one of these existing systems see our Smart Countdown Control for an on-demand pump solution or purchase the Smart Thermostatic Control 32 and Maxx-Flow valve(s) to upgrade your valves to the high flow valves.
This controller can be configured and upgraded with your smart phone and supports “Live Data”TM, “Smart Timers”TM and logging.
It works using our Maxx-Flow thermostatic crossover valve which is installed underneath the sink(s) that are furthest from the water heater and a user supplied pump that is installed on the outlet of the hot water heater.
One MAxx-Flow valve needs to be installed at the end of each dead-end hot water line. If you need to know how many valves you need check this guide.
Rather than running the pump all the time or on a timer as other systems do, the Smart Thermostatic Control 32 waits until it senses hot water being used anywhere in the house and then turns the pump on.
When the pump runs it pushes the cold water in the line through the Maxx-Flow thermostatic crossover valve(s) and when the hot water reaches the valve(s) it closes and stops the flow of water. The Smart Thermostatic Control 32 senses that water has stopped flowing and turns the pump off unlike other systems that simply allow the pump to dead head against the closed valve.
The controller then goes dormant for a user-configurable period of time so it isn’t switching the pump on immediately after heating the system up (default 10 minutes).
The Smart Thermostatic Control 32 demand-sensing hot water recirculation control system is configured via a smartphone app with “Live Flow”TM, which shows the flow meter value in real-time.
The Bluetooth app allows you to easily configure the “on” and “off” flow values independently but tests have shown that the default values work well in most installations.
The Smart Thermostatic Control 32 is also configurable to run via “Smart Timers”TM in order to heat the system up on a schedule. The controller will turn the pump on, allow it to get up to speed, and run it until the flow drops below the “off” value. It will then go to sleep for the dormant period before testing the system for flow again.
Of course, the controller will still run the pump on demand, whenever you need hot water, outside of the timer periods.
The “Smart Timers”TM are disabled if the controller doesn’t sense any hot water draw within 24 hours. So if you go on vacation and forget to manually disable the timers, no worries, they will turn themselves off and re-enable as soon as it senses a hot water draw.
The Smart Timers are set via our Android app for Smart Thermostatic Control 32 or iPhone or iPad app for Smart Thermostatic Control 32 using your smart device. Our app does not collect data on our customers.
Turning any domestic hot water system into an on-demand system couldn’t be simpler!
This product requires that you provide your own pump. If you need a recirculation pump or the complete system, check here for more selections and assistance.
If you have a recirculation pump with a Watts – Grundfos – Taco style thermostatic system you need Smart Countdown Control 32.

Great product! Easy to install!!I love the ability to monitor and adjust the system with the app and the logs are very helpful as well.

I installed the Smart Thermostatic Control about a week ago at the same time I installed a new tank water heater. So far, it works as advertised and I’m very pleased. The control was easy to set up. It basically worked as soon I powered it up – no default settings even had to be changed. I am currently tweaking some settings to optimize pump run times, but it’s probably not really necessary. I am currently using a set of the Smart Control’s timers as well as the on-demand function – both work well. My household plumbing configuration required me to use multiple thermostatic crossover valves and I had concerns how well the whole system would work, but this doesn’t seem to be a problem – all hot water loops heat up fine. (I’m using Aquamotion ODR crossover valves and an Aquamotion AMR recirculating pump.) I had originally planned to use my smart home system to control the pump, similar to conventional timers that can be added to pumps. However, I’ve been amazed at how little the pump actually needs to run to keep the recirculating loop up to temperature. The Smart Control does a nice job of monitoring flow through the water heater and knowing when the pump needs to run and turns it off when not needed. So far, the pump seems to run about 10% of the time during “timer on” periods instead of 100% of that time with a conventional timer – saving electricity to power the pump and saving wear/tear on the pump and plumbing. Pump run times are logged and are available within the Smart Control app and have been valuable in optimizing the system for my house. I had a couple of questions from the time I started investigating controllers and Dave from Leridian Dynamics has been very helpful and has provided prompt support. If things continue to work as they have for the first week, I will continue to be happy.
